When we think of bullying, it’s easy to picture the classic movie scenes: shoving the “nerdy guy” down in the school yard, the cruel instant messages, spitballs at the head in class…
These days, it is important for us to remember that bullying is not always loud, obnoxious, and easily identifiable. Bullying can hide behind casual comments, within the voices of people close to us, and even behind smiles.
Bullying can happen in any setting, at any age, and even at home. It can sound like a family member criticizing your appearance, dismissing your feelings, mocking your dreams, and laughing at your ideas. It can look like subtle exclusion, comparison, or those “just a joke” comments that leave you feeling small.
We don’t often call it “bullying” when it comes from a relative. Yet, it still stings just as deeply – if not deeper. Comparing siblings, using guilt and shame as control, and dismissing feelings can leave long-lasting marks.
On Anti-Bullying Day, it’s important to remember that everyone, including you, deserves respect. The old saying “sticks and stones may break my bones…” is just not accurate. Words do hurt, and emotional wounds can linger.
Anti-Bullying Day should also be a time of self-reflection. Let’s use today to look inward and pause and reflect:
- Are my words kind?
- Are my words uplifting?
- Are my words coming from something I feel insecure about?
There are only positive changes that can occur from checking our tone, our words, and our habits. Making changes to our actions starts with our awareness, and there’s no better time to start than today!
