It’s nearly here… what we’ve waited in nine months of rain for! And although when you think of summer, you think of beach days, BBQs, and ice cream cones melting faster than you can lick them, it can also bring a wave of anxiety that threatens to dampen those sunny vibes.

Summer anxiety is real, folks. Whether it’s the pressure to have a “summer body” (whatever that is!), the fear of missing out on all the fun, or just feeling overwhelmed by the heat, many of us find ourselves struggling to stay cool in more ways than one. I’m here to remind you that it’s okay to not be okay, even when the sun is shining.

So, how can we take care of our mental health when the temperatures starts to rise? Here are a few tips to help you keep your cool and embrace those summer vibes:

  1. Practice Mindfulness: When your mind starts racing with worries about upcoming beach parties or social gatherings, take a moment to ground yourself in the present. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and focus on the sensations around you—the warmth of the sun on your skin, the sound of birds chirping, the smell of freshly cut grass. By bringing your attention to the here and now, you can quiet those anxious thoughts and enjoy the beauty of summer.
  2. Set Boundaries: With summer comes lots of invitations to events and activities, and it’s easy to feel like you have to say yes to everything. But remember, it’s okay to say no. Prioritize your mental health by setting boundaries and only committing to the things that truly bring you joy. Whether it’s a quiet night in with a good book or a picnic in the park with friends, do what feels right for you.
  3. Stay Hydrated: This may seem like a no-brainer, but staying hydrated is crucial for both your physical and mental well-being, especially in the summer heat. Dehydration can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and fatigue, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. And hey, why not jazz it up with some sliced fruit or a splash of lemon for an extra refreshing boost?
  4. Get Moving: Exercise is a powerful antidote to anxiety, releasing feel-good endorphins that can help lift your mood and reduce stress. Plus, getting outside and soaking up some vitamin D can do wonders for your mental health. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood or a heart-pounding game of beach volleyball, find ways to move your body that bring you joy.
  5. Practice Self-Compassion: Above all, be kind to yourself. Summer can be a time of heightened expectations, but it’s important to remember that nobody’s life is perfect—not even those Instagram influencers with their perfectly curated beach photos. Embrace the messy, imperfect beauty of your own life, and remember that it’s okay to take things one day at a time.
  6. Therapy Talking to a therapist can help dissect these feelings and work through what is going on for you. You can learn coping strategies as well as get to know yourself better and feel more in control of your thoughts, behaviours and actions.

So, as we dive headfirst into the dog days of summer, let’s make a pact to prioritize our mental health and embrace the season with open hearts and open minds. Whether you’re soaking up the sun on a sandy beach or chilling on a patio with a cold beverage, remember that you are worthy of love, joy, and all the good things that summer has to offer. Cheers to that!🌞🌻
